The Town of Mammoth Lakes is pleased to announce the start of construction of the Upper Main Street Project. Construction is anticipated to begin the week of May 15 with minor activity outside the paved area. This much-needed improvement will result in a six-foot wide sidewalk on the north side of Main Street/State Route 203 from Mountain Boulevard to Minaret Road. Also included are street lights, a new retaining wall and transit shelter. Southern California Edison (SCE) will also be will be working in the area removing the last of the utility poles.
The Public is advised to take extra care in the area throughout the construction period, expected to run from mid-May through early September. Once work begins, there will be traffic control and no street lighting for most of the 1,600 foot section. Motorists are advised to reduce speed and adhere to traffic control measures. Pedestrians are advised to use the south side of Main Street, taking extra caution as there is no sidewalk on that side.
The project is funded by a combination of State Transportation Improvement Program funds (STIP), the Town of Mammoth Lakes including the developer of the future Mammoth View Project. Mono County Local Transportation Commission was a critical partner in obtaining the Federal STIP funds. Special thanks are extended to SCE, Mono County and the Mammoth View developer for working together to complete the project to underground the utilities through the area. The $3 million project is being constructed by Spiess Construction with day to day monitoring by the Town of Mammoth Lakes and oversight by Caltrans District 9.
