Town of Mammoth Lakes (TOML), The Sierra Conservation Project, Inc. (SCP) and Mammoth Disposal (MD) are excited to announce the expansion of current condominium, commercial, and recreational area recycling programs in the Town of Mammoth Lakes. TOML, SCP and MD are working on a grant-funded project to expand condominium programs and to increase and improve commercial recycling programs within the Town of Mammoth Lakes.

SCP and MD are working in partnership with the Town of Mammoth Lakes and the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) to provide convenient recycling opportunities for both visitors and residents of Mammoth Lakes. Thanks to a $211,732 grant from CalRecycle, the project will be able to expand current condo programs by providing outdoor bear-proof recycling containers to condominiums and apartment complexes. SCP will also be expanding and improving their commercial recycling programs by upgrading their business recycling container fleet to bear proof models. Mammoth Disposal will utilize funds to purchase equipment to increase efficiency at their recycling center in Mammoth Lakes. The aim of the project is to provide the bear-proof containers and other equipment necessary to launch successful recycling programs within the community that benefits guests, residents and wildlife.

AB 341 Information

A State of California Bill (AB 341) directed by CalRecycle mandating commercial recycling within the State of California went into effect July 1, 2012. The Town of Mammoth Lakes provides education and outreach to help the community comply with regulations.

The goal of AB 341 is to increase the statewide recycling rates to 75% by 2020. On July 1 2012, regulations stated that businesses and public entities that generate four cubic yards or more of waste per week and Multi-Family units of five or more be required to recycle. The purpose of this law is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting commercial solid waste to recycling efforts and expand opportunities for additional recycling services and recycling manufacturing facilities in California.

Additional information provided by CalRecycle that addresses AB 341 can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions document.

The Town of Mammoth Lakes (TOML), Sierra Conservation Project (SCP) and Mammoth Disposal (MD) are taking active steps to assist businesses and multi-family residences to comply with new and existing regulations.

The following recycling programs are currently available within the TOML:
  • Commercial cardboard recycling
  • Restaurant and bar programs
  • Lodging and hospitality programs
  • Business recycling
  • Multi-family/Apartment recycling
  • Office recycling
  • Residential recycling
  • Aluminum, plastic, and glass
  • E-Waste
  • Used oil and batteries

Some of the benefits of recycling identified by CalRecycle are creating jobs in California, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, keeping valuable materials out of landfills, and creating a healthy environment for the community and future generations by recovering natural resources.

How the Multi-Family Recycling Program Works

Sierra Conservation Project is working on a grant-funded project to deliver comprehensive recycling programs to condominium complexes in the Eastern Sierra. This joint effort between Sierra Conservation Project, The Town of Mammoth Lakes and CalRecycle provide a unique opportunity for multi family residential locations to set up their facilities with professional and effective recycling infrastructure at no cost while supplies last.

How the program works…
SCP provides costly bear proof recycling systems at no cost to local complexes.
Affordable program implementation allows complexes to reduce environmental impacts with no set up expenses. The Sierra Conservation Project conducts a free on-site analysis of your complex, then creates an implementation plan and delivers the recycling infrastructure needed to start an efficient and effective recycling program for your Mammoth Lakes location.
