Whitmore Recreation Area

The Whitmore Recreation Area is located 6 miles south of Mammoth Lakes, just off U.S. HWY 395 on the Benton Crossing Road and includes the NEW Whitmore Track & Sports Field, Whitmore Pool and 3 ball fields. The Town has developed 10 acres of the total leased area (32.64) for public and programmed use. The recreation area is open from April through November from sunrise to sunset. The facility is leased from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and is operated by the Town of Mammoth Lakes. A shared facility maintenance agreement is also in effect with the County of Mono.

NEW Whitmore Track & Sports Field

This stunning facility is the culmination of a successful public/private partnership between The Town of Mammoth Lakes and the newly expanded Mammoth Track Club (incorporating the High Sierra Striders running club). At a cost of $2.3 Million, construction began for Phase I of this facility on July 9, 2012, and was completed on November 17, 2012. The Whitmore Track and Sports Field is an all-weather, 9-lane polyurethane running track, with a full-size synthetic turf infield striped for both soccer and football that includes goals, terrace seating, restrooms and ample parking. Reservations are required for the exclusive use of the track or field for a specific time period, date and use. Only one (1) reservation (track or field) will be permitted for use at the facility at any given time. This facility is utilized by the Mammoth Unified School District, Mammoth Track Club, Mammoth AYSO soccer, and frequent public use. The Recreation Department also programs the facility for public use for a fee.

Whitmore Pool

The Whitmore Pool is located adjacent to the ball fields on Benton Crossing Road. The facility includes a six-lane 25-meter pool, children's wading pool, restrooms, hot showers, lawn area, shade structure and vending machines. The pool is open from mid-May through early September and the facilities are available for private use by reservation. American Red Cross-certified personnel staff the pool. Use of the larger pool may be near capacity during the warmer months of the year. In May and June, the pool is used for lap swim during the morning and by the swim team at other times of day. The pool is used for its full summer session of public swimming in July and August, with continued use by the swim team as well.

Whitmore Ball Fields

Facilities include a regulation baseball diamond, two softball fields (one lighted), restrooms and parking. Peak use of these fields occurs in March and April, with use by high school baseball and softball programs, and by Mono County Little League baseball (Little League use occurs until the Shady Rest fields are cleared after their later snowmelt).

The Parks and Recreation Master Plan recommends the following facility improvements:

  • ADA upgrades
  • Rehabilitate sports fields as deemed necessary
  • Upgrade restrooms at ball fields
  • Update playground equipment
  • Install picnic shelter and/or additional picnic tables
  • Create master plan for further park improvements
