COMMUNITY CELEBRATES OPENING OF THE MAMMOTH LAKES DOG PARK
The Town Council officially opened the first-ever community dog park in Mammoth Lakes on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 with a large group of dog owners and their four-legged friends in attendance. The park is open from dawn to dusk, between May and November, weather permitting.
How We Got Here
The Town began planning for a free, pet-friendly dog park in 2021 that encourages community inclusion and fosters connections, while promoting responsible dog ownership. A community dog park was identified in the 2021/22 Town of Mammoth Lakes Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and the 2021 Parks and Recreation Department Strategic Workplan.
This project was made possible by the T-Mobile Hometown Grant Program. On October 6, 2021, representatives from T-Mobile presented the Town Council, Parks and Recreation Commission, community advocates, and Town staff with a $50,000 check. The Town would like to thank T-Mobile for their generosity and commitment to jumpstart vital community development projects in rural communities. The Town would also like to acknowledge the Parks and Recreation Commission, Pawsitively Mammoth, the Mammoth Lakes Chamber of Commerce, Mammoth Lakes Recreation, Mammoth Lakes Police Department, Sierra Dog Ventures, and our many residents who passionately advocated for this much needed recreation amenity.
“Mammoth Lakes residents and visitors have long needed a dog park to provide our dogs with a safe place to play off leash and a place where dog lovers can safely gather to swap animal tales, particularly important in this prolonged pandemic. We are incredibly grateful to T-Mobile and the Town of Mammoth Lakes for helping make our dreams come true!” Barb Maynard, Pawsitively Mammoth.
Dog Park Details
The Mammoth Lakes Community Dog Park is open from dawn to dusk (weather permitting). The Dog Park provides a free, pet-friendly park that encourages community inclusion, fosters connections, and improves public safety. The Dog Park will promote proper dog ownership and etiquette, pet wellness, and an enhanced quality of life for pets and people.
The approximate 1 acre off-leash area includes a 5-foot perimeter fence, a double-entry gate system, 5,000 square feet of synthetic dog turf, paved parking for 40 vehicles, winterized restroom with water fountains, bottle filling stations, benches, dog waste stations, trash receptacles, ADA access, and signage. The dog park will have separate small and large dog areas to allow dogs of different sizes and ages to avoid interacting and causing possible conflicts. Puppies and shy dogs will have the opportunity to interact and get used to the high level of activity that can occur in a dog park.
